Replacing a concrete driveway in Hoffman Estates will require a building permit.  Below is the building code for a concrete and asphalt driveway according to the Village of Hoffman Estates.

Keep in mind these are the minimum standards for a driveway in Hoffman Estates.  We go above and beyond many of the village specifications in things such as slab thickness, concrete strength and reinforcement.

-Driveways are only permitted in front yards if they lead to an approved parking structure. Paved driveways are required between the public sidewalk and the parking structure.

-The driveway, including decorative ribbons, must match the apron width at the sidewalk.

-The apron must be a minimum of 10 feet wide at the property line/sidewalk and widen to12 feet at the curbline. The maximum apron width is 30 feet.

-Aprons must be flared a minimum of one foot on each side.

-Only one curb cut is permitted on residential lots unless the lot is more than 20,000 square feet or has more than 150 feet of street frontage, then the lot is permitted two curb cuts.

-New aprons in the right-of-way must be constructed of concrete. Replacement aprons within the right of way may only be asphalt if the existing apron is asphalt.

-Concrete for driveways/aprons must be a 6 bag mix and test at 3,500Ibs in 28 days.

-Public sidewalks must be 5 feet wide and constructed of concrete to a depth of 5 inches over crushed gravel with a minimum thickness of 4 inches.

-Brick Paver –Driveways and aprons must be constructed with a minimum 8 inches of crushed gravel and minimum of 1 inch of sand/granular bedding. Brick paving stones must not be less than 2 3/8 inches in thickness. A covenant regarding driveway and
apron responsibility may be required for brick paver use.

-Asphalt –Aprons are required to have a minimum of 3 inches of asphalt over an 8 inch crushed gravel base. Driveways are required to have a minimum of 2 inches of asphalt over a 6 inch base of crushed gravel.

-Concrete –A minimum of 4 inches of crushed gravel is required. Concrete thickness is required to be a minimum of 4 inches for the driveways and 6 inches for the apron. #10 6x6 steel mesh is required on driveways and aprons. Fiber mesh additive is not a substitute for wire mesh.

Customer Feedback

In the past, I've used Big Box stores for my home improvement needs until I had a few problems with the companies they sub-contract with. Since then, I have tried to use only local contractors with whom I can deal with personally.

This year I needed to have my pitted, chipped and flaked patio replaced. I checked local concrete contractors and looked up their ratings on the BBB website. One contractor, Catalano Concrete appeared to be just what I was looking for.

I called and within a day, the owner, who has been in the business for 35 years, came over to look at the job and give me an estimate. He spent a lot of time with me discussing options as well as taking numerous measurements to ensure my previous grading problems were addressed. His estimate was reasonable and we went to contract.

Two days after I obtained the appropriate permits, Sal Catalano and his team were at the house, meeting the inspector and ready for work. Within two days, the old patio was removed and the new patio installed. Two days later the crew came back to break down the forms and clean up. The new patio is great and just what we wanted. The back yard was cleaned up and so no one would know that a crew of 6 or 7 workmen did any work at all.

Sal and his team were not only competitive in price and professional, but very helpful in offering suggestions to improve the overall product. I would strongly recommend Catalano Concrete for anyone who may be contemplating concrete work.

Sal showed up on time to give us an estimate. Told us all we would have to do - very little. Called two weeks later to check on village permit. When I told him I had the permit in hand, he showed up within 30 minutes to dig out our old porch. The next day they poured the new porch - slightly bigger at Sal's suggestion, with the new walkway. It is absolutely beautiful. A great on-time job. I would definitely recommend Catalano Concrete Construction to anyone! Definitely 5 stars and then some!!!!

Catalano Concrete installed new brick steps for a front door entrance. The workers helped me choose the brick that pulled the whole look together: matching siding, the new door, and existing plants. I ended up with a beautiful entrance to my home. He kept all appointments on time and he and his crew did a great job. He aways answered my phone calls in a few minutes!

The 3rd day they poured! its amazing we could walk on the front stoop after 2 days! it looks great & I would def. recommend them to anyone! Fast & great to work with!

Dear Sal,

We would like to say thank you for fixing the sidewalk block in front of our house.  We were so disappointed when we found the words and drawings that had been written in the freshly poured concrete.  Thank you for coming  back and finding a way fo fix it up- at NO CHARGE.  We really appreciate it.  It is so rare to find a company or individual who will put forth the extra effort to make things right.  Thank you so much.  We will be sure to call you in the future with any concrete work we need done.

You did a terrific job of installing our concrete garage floor and driveway.  Top notch service and exceptional craftsmanship.  We also appreciate you keeping us in touch with every aspect of the job.  All of our neighbors have commented on how nice our driveway looks.  We highly recommend your services!

I would definitely use Catalano Concrete again.  From the beginning they did what they said they would do. They returned calls promptly and answered my questions to my complete satisfaction.  They came out and gave me a quote within a day of contacting them.  They gave me a starting time for the work after the contract was signed and started on time!  The work they did was excellent!  It was a pleasure to do business with a company that takes pride in their work.

I cannot explain how happy I am about the job you guys did.  Everything was done perfect and left clean.  Thank you very much for doing such a good job!!  My grandmother can’t wait until the weather is nicer so she can have her tea on the new patio.

Catalano Concrete Construction responded to my request for someone to contact me within hours of sending my info. They came out that evening and were able to get me a quote on the spot which was good since we had a tight time line. We hired them to do the work and the day before our pour they gave us a visit since they were in the area to make sure all was good. The day of our pour their crew was professional and hard working and it was a pleasure working with them.

Concrete Contractor Checklist

What you need to know before selecting a contractor

1)   Are they insured for liability and workers compensation?

Any contractor you use should have liability and workman’s compensation insurance. The insurance protects you if your property is damaged during the job or if one of the company’s employees is injured while working on your property. While a state license is not required by the state, some cities require licensing. Catalano Concrete is a licensed contractor and carries both types of insurance with $2 million coverage.

2)   Are they a member of the Better Business Bureau, if so, what is their rating?

Get the answer to this question, then follow up by checking the rating yourself. The company’s BBB rating will give you a good idea of how their work meets customer’s expectations. Catalano Concrete is proud of our A+ BBB rating.

CATALANO CONCRETE       YES!

3)   Do they specialize in concrete and how many years of experience do they have?

It is important the company you select specializes in concrete and does not sub contract the work to someone else and has been doing concrete for a while. If a company has been doing concrete work for a long time, that’s evidence they are not some Johnny-come-lately startup that may not have the experience and equipment needed to do quality work that will withstand our Chicago winters. Sal Catalano has been doing concrete, and only concrete, for over 30 years!

CATALANO CONCRETE        YES!

4)   Will they provide a detailed written estimate?

It is critical you receive a written estimate that includes dimensions, scope of work, materials used (e.g. six bag mix 4000 psi concrete) and payment schedule with minimal legal jargon.

  CATALANO CONCRETE         YES!

5)   Can you see nearby examples of their work?

Any good contractor should be able to give you examples of work they’ve done near your location, so you can drive by and have a look. Catalano Concrete is proud of their work, and is always happy to show it off.

CATALANO CONCRETE       YES!

6)   Do they have high ratings on consumer groups, such as Angies List?

A contractor who does high quality work will have customers eager to give feedback regarding their work.  The same is true for those that do very poor work.  A simple Google search will uncover what others are saying about a contractor.  We are proud of the reviews we have received on Angies List, Service Magic, BBB, and other sites.  Feel free to Google us!
